While I used your comment as an example, this post wasn't a dig at your opinion. You later explained why you didn't like the game. The comment itself, however, represents a great deal of people currently playing Rift and other similar games. The public channel is filled with comments like "I don't like this because it's like WoW," etc. That doesn't help a listener nor does it help the developers who are spending their time pouring over the chat logs for helpful hints on the direction of their game.

There are certain universals when talking about complaints: "I don't like the cold", "I don't like being broke/poor", "I don't like the Texas sized meteor about to fall out of the sky." I'm not talking about these complaints because, well, they're self-explanatory. However, saying the same regarding a particular game is the same. Using your example, saying "I don't like Safeway brand tissue because it's like Kleenex tissue" means what, exactly? There are dozens of attributes related to a kleenex tissue and to tissues in general, but what, specifically, about it does the person not like? That's where my being annoyed comes from.

"I don't like x because it's like Y," is a simplification of someone's opinion and a normal conversational tool. Without asking for a detailed reason, most people will just leave it as that and move on. It's a hard sale to convince folks to explain in detail each opinion they state. It would be helpful to get a better judge on what their opinions and values are, but ultimately for most that's a tedious method when for most things it's enough. A person can say they don't like it when it's cold. They don't need to go into detail about how it makes their joints hurt, or it reminds them of some deep seated emotion. We accept on face value, they don't like the cold.
To go to your example of "I don't like Rifts, because it's like World of Warcraft," we can infer certain things from the statement. Both games are in the same genre, both mechanically and setting wise, so it's easy to jump from there. Additionally both games are in the same market (MMO's), and it's an easy leap to assume that could be the correlation, given that many people use World of Warcraft as a generic term for MMO's (see q-tips as cotton swabs, Kleenex as tissue, Tylenol for headache relief). Do we necessarily need someone giving their opinion on a game to go into detail behind why they feel that opinion? Well, that's a person by person assessment and lies more with overall expectation than with the particular topic at hand.
Rifts, unto itself, is mechanically much like Warcraft, and I for one don't care for it. This goes with the fact many MMO's are like Warcraft, and personally, when I assess a game with the statement "I don't like x because it's like World of Warcraft," it's very likely that it matches the similar respective mechanics of Warcraft and its kin. They are not necessarily bad games, but ultimately they are wholly similar to one another. Individual features may vary, but the core game play does not change on a mechanics scale.

Hmmm, I suppose what I'm most annoyed at is the fact that these games aren't being marketed as what they are. Instead, these genres are being manipulated to dupe potential players into an experience that isn't exactly what's expected.

More than that, I have a pet peeve about things being mislabeled.

I'm really looking forward to TOR! Hopefully there's another blizzard when that game comes out.

So, is that better, worse, neither? Honestly I can't stand most MMORPGs (too many ppl grinding and not RPing) but I like the idea of a "multiplayer RPG" and it looks like that's what TOR is shooting for, which I would probably approve of.
